Reversing The Decline Of Seabird Populations

SANCCOB (Southern African Foundation for the Conservation of Coastal Birds) is a non-profit organisation dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation, and conservation of seabirds, especially threatened species like the African penguin.

We began supporting SANCCOB in 2025 with funding for their education programme.

SANCCOB’s Environmental Education Programme

SANCCOB’s Environmental Education Programme empowers youth and communities through immersive conservation learning experiences, with a focus on the Critically Endangered African Penguin. Their goal is to scale outreach through mobile and on-site experiences, modernise learning tools, and piloting innovative projects—such as a marine conservation comic series—to expand reach and relevance. They are targeting a rollout for a period of 12 months to communities surrounding six of the main seabird colonies in South Africa, fostering stewardship where conservation efforts are most vital.

Projects that will be incporporated within the programme include:

  • “Penguin Protectors” Comic Series - A fun, engaging educational tool designed to reach learners of all ages.

  • Land-Base Education Rollouts to Communities Surrounding Penguin Colonies - Directly integrate environmental education within communities

surrounding the main penguin breeding colonies.

  • Resource Development and Digital Access - An open-access digital platform for schools to access SANCCOB’s resources—including the comic series, activities,

    and interactive tools.
